Dish TV Lanka First Look

It looks like the day has finally arrived. Dish TV is finally launching in Sri Lanka on May 25th. The Customer Service Hotline is (011) 5 111 222.

Being one Asia's largest DTH service operators, Dish TV Sri Lanka will house the regional uplinking station to reach out to other Asian countries in the subcontinent. Dish TV Lanka can uplink channels not permitted to by Dish TV India, due to Indian regulations.

Besides that Dish TV has uplinked many local FTA channels & are expected to send local operators packing. But will they? The Sri Lankan market is different to India's, Dish TV consists of almost all channels in Indian feeds, even the ones for which we have begun to take Asian feeds for granted.

The deep pockets of Dish TV are certainly capable of adding those channels, but they seem to be more focused by the higher rentals they could charge locals compared to the ones in India.

The service is starting off as a basic service, No HD, No PVR. Recent Screen Shots reveal that the HBO will be HBO India, no news of AXN & some others, Sun TV have not yet granted permission for their channels to be carried on Dish TV Lanka. The Hindi channels will be the Indian feeds as opposed to the Asian feeds presently enjoyed.

Dialog DTH HD dilemma & solution

Recently Dialog TV have been sending SMS to Dialog TV subscribers offering the HD channels at special rates for a limited period of time. This comes hot on the heels of a free preview for HD channels which ended a week or so ago.

It seems that the adoption of the HD package among even those of the Gold package is low. It's a well known fact that those who really want the HD Channels are opting for the Indian DTH services where they offer a higher number of HD channels at almost half the prices offered by Dialog TV for the Gold package which doesn't have HD as standard.

Even though Dialog introduced HD several years ago they haven't been exactly been able to make inroads to the HD market. Most of the HD Channels are the same provided by the Indian operators except in the case of AXN HD & Setanta HD. Dialog doesn't have a dedicated HD movie channel now after the pull out of Star Movies HD. Many have been requesting for Fox Movies Premium but it does not look like that will ever materialize. Star World Premiere was a good addition but regional rights have been affecting the programming, however it's a channel that should be retained.

To solve Dialog's HD dilemma we propose that they add the HD channels to the Gold package FOC, this would prove to be a incentive to attract subscribers to the Gold package, in addition they will be able to better attract those who opt for Indian services. If this situation goes unchecked the Indian services will gain a strong foothold on the HD market in Sri Lanka.

The ball is in Dialog's court now, will they opt for making a short term profit or for benefiting in the long run

Dish TV Sri Lanka adds new channels, a-la-carte coming soon

A few days ago Dish TV Sri Lanka added some new channels to it's channel line up with the launch of a new package which brings the total tally of channels to 67. The rental is double of those in the base pack.

New channels such as Cartoon Network, Discovery Kids, Discovery Channel, Zee Cafe, Sony Six, Zee Studio, Zee Cinema & Zee TV are among the new comers. A notable surprise is the lack of Ten Sports channels which are also operated by Dish TV parent Zee.

Also an a-la-carte offering is being prepared. The link which briefly went online on friday has since being taken down by Dish TV Sri Lanka & it contained Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Turbo, Discovery Science, Pogo, Toonami & several regional channels. The link has been replaced by a "Coming Soon" link now. This link is expected to go online soon once again.

Satellite TV Dish Antenna

For the reception of Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS) home service, you need a small satellite TV dish antenna. Here, as "small" is considered anything bellow 40" in diameter. Dish antenna mounted at the subscriber's residence receives the signal emitted by a TV satellite.  From the dish, the signal is transferred to the satellite TV receiver and, finally, to the TV set.

DBS dish antenna is of so called "center feed" type, with a paraboloidal dish surface focusing radio waves from TV satellite onto the actual small antenna ( or feed) centered in front it. The assembly containing the feed is called feedhorn. Signal generated by the antenna is fed to the LNB unit.

LNB stands for "low-noise block down-converter". It converts very high satellite signal frequency from the GHz (Giga-Hertz, billions cycles per second) range, or block, into MHz (Mega-Hertz, millions cycles per second) range. Sometimes the LNBF designation is used, which is merely a feedhorn with integrated LNB unit. The LNB also amplifies very weak satellite signal before it makes it to the satellite TV receiver. It is very important that the LNB unit contributes as little as possible of its own "noise" to the signal it amplifies.

The noise produced by LNB is due to its operational temperature, creating thermal radiation effectively lowering the strength of received signal. LNB units have gone long way since the early days: today's LNB noise level standard is around 1dB (decibel), or less. The lower LNB noise level, the lower signal loss due to thermal waves interference, and the better signal quality.

Originally, DBS satellite dishes had a single LNB unit, thus limited to handling a single satellite input. Nowadays, they come with up to 5 LNB units mounted on so called "multi-satellite" dishes. A dual-feed LNB unit has its potential channel capacity doubled, due to being handling both polarization modes (polarization is splitting one same frequency in two modes, so that each mode can be independently used for transmission). It is not to be confused with "dual band" LNB, capable of transmitting two different frequency ranges.
